Specification & Features

Discover the AH-64D Apache Longbow at 1:24 scale

The AH-64 is a twin engine helicopter with a four blade main rotor. The pilot and gunner are seated in tandem configuration. A 30mm M230 chain gun is located under the fuselage and rocket pods and anti-tank missiles are carried on the stub wings.

Its weapons system includes the Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, air-to-air missiles (Stinger, AIM-9 Sidewinder, Mistral and Sidearm), and the APKWS weapon system family of guided and unguided 70mm rockets. The AH-64 also carries the mast mounted Longbow fire control radar, giving this Apache its iconic silhouette.

Our 1:24 scale model is an authentic replica of the AH-64D Apache Longbow Attack Helicopter, including powered main and tail rotors, lights, sound, plus: missiles (DAGR, AGM-114), missile launchers (M261), storage containers, rockets (FIM-92 Stinger, CRV7), four fuel tanks and ski kit.

A dual-height stand and full set of replica maintenance platforms completes the display.

The World's Most Advanced Attack Helicopter

Hughes Helicopters began developing the Model 77 to enter it into the selection process of the United States Army, who wanted to replace the AH-1 Cobra. The prototype (YAH-64) was first flown on 30 September 1975 and went on to beat the competition. It was chosen as the next Attack Helicopter for the U.S. Army in 1976 and entered full production in 1982 as the AH-64 Apache.

Hughes Helicopters was purchased by McDonnell Douglas in 1984, who continued with the production and development of the Apache. The helicopter was put into service in 1986, and first saw combat for the U.S. Army in Panama, 1989. The Apache would later play a role in Operation Desert Storm, and support low intensity and peacekeeping operations in Turkey, Bosnia, and Kosovo.

The advanced AH-64D Apache Longbow was delivered to the U.S. Army in March 1997 and deployed in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. By the end of the year, McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing who have continued production of the Apache ever since. As of 2023, over 2700 AH-64s have been delivered to nations worldwide, and production is expected to continue for many years to come. While the U.S. Army is the primary operator, many defence forces worldwide count the Apache among their fleet.

In March 2023, the U.S. Army announced that the pilots of the Apache AH-64 had achieved more than 5 million flight hours, equating to flying nonstop for more than 208,333 days, of which 1.3 million are combat hours. With its advanced systems and durable design, the Apache AH-64 is truly in a class by itself.

  • Type: Twin-turboshaft attack helicopter

  • Length: 17.73 m (58 ft)

  • Height: 4.95 m (16 ft)
  • Main Rotor span: 14.63 m(48 ft)

  • Empty weight: 5,165 kg (11,387 lbs)

  • Rotors: Four-blade main, four-blade tail

  • Cockpit: Tandem, two crew

  • Landing gear: Tailwheel (reverse tricycle)
  • Engines: General Electric T700-GE-701 (U.S.) Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca RTM322 (UK)

  • Endurance: 3 hrs

  • Unrefuelled range: 900 miles (1450 km) with 4 external under wing fuel tanks

  • Maximum speed: 173mph (279 km/h)

  • Climb rate: 2916 ft/min (889 m/min)

The AH-64 Apache can be loaded with the combination of armaments as dictated by the mission requirements. For a close support role, the helicopter is outfitted with 16 Hellfire missiles and four air-to-air missiles.

30mm automatic Boeing M230 chain gun
With a capacity of 1,200 rounds, firing at 625 rounds a minute, the chain gun is located under the fuselage. It can be slaved by the gunner or pilot to their helmet, making the gun track head movements and point where they are looking.

Lockheed Martin / Boeing AGM-114D Longbow Hellfire ASM missiles
An air-to-surface missile designed for anti-armor use, which has a millimetre wave seeker that allows the missile to perform in full fire and forget mode at a range of 5 to 7 1/2 miles (8km to 12km).

AIM-9 Sidewinder / APKWS missiles
The Apache can be equipped with a variety of air-to-air missiles, most often the widely-used AIM-9 Sidewinder, which uses proportional guidance to lead its target, or the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS, formerly Hydra) laser-guided precision missile.

To protect the Apache from enemy attack, the helicopter is equipped with an electronic-warfare suite, including:

  • AN/APR-39A(V) radar warning receiver
  • AN/APR-48A Radar Frequency Interferometer Electronic Support target acquisition system
  • AN/ALQ-144 infra-red countermeasures
  • AN/AVR-2 laser warning receiver
  • AN/ALQ-136(V) radar jammer
  • chaff dispensers

The crew compartment is designed to sustain hits from 23mm rounds, with shielding between the cockpits to allow at least one crew member to survive hits. Both crew members are capable of flying the aircraft and deploying weapons independently.
